Course syllabus

What you study.

Five short sections of research-based strategies for turning workplace disagreement into creative collaboration.

Topics covered
  1. Understanding Disagreement and Conflict — telling agreement, disagreement and conflict apart by informational skew, importance and interdependence, and how negative assumptions and the belief that our view is perfectly objective lead to unnecessary conflict.
  2. Thinking With Receptiveness — receptiveness as a strategic tool for influence and better decisions — not “giving in” — and using a personal receptiveness score to find your strengths and areas for growth.
  3. Acting with Receptiveness — shifting a conversation’s goal from winning the argument to understanding the other person, and a cycle of questioning and listening that encourages open information sharing.
  4. Making Yourself Heard — the H.E.A.R. framework — Hedge your claims, Emphasize agreement, Acknowledge other perspectives and Reframe to the positive — and using personal narratives alongside data to make ideas compelling.
  5. Fostering Productive Disagreement in Teams — spotting “poisonous” moments, resolving impasses and negative spirals, and how any team member can build a receptive culture by modeling positive behaviors.
