Course syllabus

What you study.

Five topics following five practitioners — all former students of the course — and the change efforts they led.

Topics covered
  1. Mobilizing adaptive work — distinguishing technical from adaptive challenges, and treating resistance as a response to loss. Case: bringing the Vermont House of Representatives online during COVID-19
  2. Closing the gap between aspiration and reality — distinguishing leadership from authority, and channeling purpose into actionable goals. Case: closing the tech skills gap in Thailand
  3. Keeping the work at the center of focus — analyzing conflict, and disappointing people at a rate they can tolerate. Case: wrap-around care for substance use disorder in Ontario
  4. Building capacity, not dependency — giving work back to others and recognizing work avoidance. Case: lowering maternal mortality in Meghalaya, India
  5. Staying in the game — anticipating the risks of exercising leadership, and learning from setbacks. Case: moving Duolingo into English language learning

Who it is for

For leaders facing problems with no easy answer.

Adaptive challenges cannot be solved with expertise alone. This course is for the people who must lead through them regardless.

No prior background required. At six hours a week this is a demanding course. Taught in English; participants should be 18 or over.

At work

Lead change when there is no ready-made answer.

Some problems cannot be solved by an expert or a new policy, because they require people to change how they work. This course is about leading those.
